Automotive fuse boxes typically fail due to overheating.

There are several causes for overheating, including added aftermarket electrical accessories or undersized wires or connections that were installed by the manufacturer, which sometimes result in factory recalls for the installation of new wiring harnesses and fuse boxes. If you have problems with your electrical system, you can check to see if your vehicle's fuse box is bad.

Keep in mind that you should always use caution when working with an automobile's electrical system. Raise the hood and remove the battery cable from the negative terminal.

Inspect the fuse box, or power center, located under the hood, often very near the battery. It has a black plastic lid and houses all the main power breakers. Remove the cover and inspect the fuses, circuit breakers and relays. Use a wrench to remove the hold-down bolts that attach the power center to the car. It may also be necessary to remove the power feed wire from the battery to the power center. Lift the power center and look underneath for heat marks, or a dark, blue halo discoloration.

This is a sure sign that something is wrong with the box and a connection has failed. Remove the screws that hold the bottom cover in place. Inspect the connections.

If there is damage, replace the power center. Although minor repairs can be made, it is best to replace the entire center. Use a flashlight to inspect the inside fuse panel. Some car manufacturers, such as Honda and Mazda, use two inside fuse panels, one under each side of the dashboard. Remove the access covers and examine the fuses as well as the wiring going into the fuse panel. Dark, discolored and burned wires are signs of failure.

You can take a power probe and shoot 12v to starter solenoid wire and it will crank and run fine.

In what country will you find the elephant house cafe

I traced that wire back to the fuse panel under the hood on the driver's side. When you turn the key to start, the fuse gets 12v but the starter relay is not getting voltage to the solenoid wire. Any suggestions? Can you swap with another relay to see if the relay is good? The starter relay has 4 pins on it. One is constant 12v. The other 3 show ground. You can take a power probe to one pin the one that is the wire going to the small wire on the actual starter solenoid and the truck will crank.

I have swapped the relays, but still has the same results. It's always the ground If it were a bad ground wouldn't it still not start when 12v is shot to the relay wire?

May be wrong Just asking. I also hooked a set of jumper cables from the ground side of the battery to the starter housing itself with same result. Yea it has power but ia power going through it? Something has to turn the relay on. Its not on all the time or else the truck would crank all the time. I have replaced it before, but when it messed up the last time the information center on the dash had a "range selector switch out of range" and now it does not.

No it is not going through it. I checked the wire on the bottom side and it is only getting voltage to the one 12v constant wire. Its gonna need more than cca to crank a diesel judge. The problem here is its not gettin a start signal cca is irrelevant in this case. BoonStewart, I have an identical problem with my Duramax. What did you find was the problem?? The battery sends power to the fuse which then transfers it to the specific system on the car. The purpose of a fuse is to prevent the battery from directly overloading and melting a systems wiring. When a fuse becomes overloaded, or is carrying too many amps of power for its capacity, the fuse breaks. When a fuse breaks, it cuts off the power supply to that specific system. So when you experience an electrical-related failure in your car, the fuses are the first place you should look.

Fuses are extremely important as they protect all of our electrical components. If your battery ran its power directly to your stereo instead of through a fuse first, if the battery accidentally overloaded the stereo it would break everything.

Fuses come in different colors and different sizes. The color and size of the fuse depict the amount of power in amps the fuse is capable of supplying. Stereo systems require a lot of electrical power, so they will usually have a bigger and more powerful fuse than say the power windows.

The amp rating is usually marked right on the top of the fuse. However, coloring can also help you identify its amp rating. You need to be careful to use the correct fuse when replacing a bad one.

While some of the different sizes will not fit into the fuse box, ie. One will be located inside of the engine bay, and the second will be located in the driver side footwell. See the below picture for the location on trucks. Note that this is what it looks like with the fuse box cover off. When you open your hood, this will have a plastic covering over it which should pop off very easily.

The second fuse box is located within the driver-side dashboard. The panel that it sits under is the triangle-like shaped panel. You should be able to pop it out pretty easily by pulling from the bottom of it. The majority of fuses will be made of a colored, see-through plastic.

This is the piece that provides the amp transfer from the battery to the system. When the fuse becomes overloaded and breaks or blows the metal connector piece will actually break.

This is a safety measure to prevent the overloaded amps from being transferred to your electrical system. Instead, the fuse blows and prevents the excess amperage from being passed to your components.

Here is a picture of a good fuse vs. While the covers for the fuse boxes should have these diagrams on the inside of the them, these cars are getting old now so they might be hard to read or have worn away by now. How to Tell If a Vehicle Fuse Box Is Bad

In automotive applications, there is usually a primary fuse box that contains the high voltage engine and fuses and relays, along with a secondary fuse box that contains the fuses and relays to the accessories. Most vehicles also have a fuse box inside of the vehicle, usually located beneath the dash that houses the fuses for the interior electronics and accessories.

While most fuse panels are built to last, they can sometimes encounter issues and cause problems with the operation of the vehicle. Usually a problematic fuse box will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential issue.

One of the first symptoms of a problem with the fuse box is fuses blowing frequently. If the fuse box has any sort of wiring issues, such as a short, it may cause the fuses to blow frequently. The vehicle may blow the same fuse repeatedly for no apparent reason. The fuse box may have to be disassembled, or removed in order to determine if this is the issue.

Another symptom of a bad or failing fuse box is loose fuses. A damaged terminal with a loose fuse may cause electrical problems such as sudden, intermittent power loss to certain accessories or lights.

Another, more serious symptom of an issue with the fuse box is burned fuses or terminals. If the terminals or fuses become overheated for any reason they may overheat and burn up.

The terminals, or the plastic that makes up the housing may become burned or melted, which will require the panel to be replaced, and in some cases even rewired. While many fuse boxes will last the life of the vehicle sometimes they can develop issues and require service. If your vehicle is displaying any of the symptoms above, or you suspect that your fuse box may need to be replaced, have the vehicle inspected by a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to determine if the fuse box should be replaced.
